What is lost media?

Lost media refers to any piece of media that once existed but is now missing, unavailable, or difficult to find. This can include movies, TV episodes, songs, video games, books, websites, software, internet videos, and many other forms of media.

Sometimes, a piece of media may have been released to the public but never properly preserved. Other times, only a few copies were ever made, and those copies may have been lost, damaged, or destroyed over time.

People who search for missing media are often known as lost-media hunters. They search through old archives, websites, storage devices, VHS tapes, computers, private collections, and other sources in the hope of finding something that has been lost.

The exciting part is that lost media isn’t always lost forever. Occasionally, someone discovers an old copy hidden away in an archive, on an old computer, or in a private collection. When previously lost media is successfully discovered, it is often referred to as found media.

Lost media is fascinating because it gives people the chance to uncover pieces of history that might otherwise have disappeared forever.
